about

Inspired by the song Fish & Bird by Tom Waits, this is our own take on the legend of star-crossed lovers at sea.

lyrics

We sat down with the sailor
My Dad brought to town.
He told us of places,
That had never been found.
My Mom brought him ale,
And he told us a tale,
Of how the littlest bird
Fell in love with a whale.

You can't be with me in the ocean,
He said.
And you never can live in the sky,
She said.
But when the water's real clear
The sea looks like a mirror,
And there's a whale in the sky
And a bird on the tide.

Baby don't cry,
Let me dry your eyes,
And tell me that you'll wait for me.
Though I know we must part,
You'll be in my heart,
For as long as there's sky and there's sea.

The memory's fresh
I can still feel your breath,
And though I'll never sail back to that time,
When the water gets rough
And I yearn for your touch,
I still can pretend that your mine.

You can't be with me in the ocean,
He said.
And you never can live in the sky,
She said.
But when the water's real clear,
The sea looks like a mirror,
And there's a whale in the sky
And a bird on the tide.

There's a whale in the sky
And a bird on the tide.
